Building a fence can be very expensive, but I've learned where to cut costs and how to recycle materials so let me share what I have learned. I'm not going to go through all of the details of fence building, but just how I saved some money doing it. Obviously you need some carpentry skills and tools to pull this off, and I always urge people to use caution when using recycled fencing materials, old boards may have lead based paint and pressure treated wood has some nasty stuff in it. Use a respirator and collect all sawdust for safe disposal. Now for the fun stuff...
Rule 1 Recycle, recycle, recycle. There is always someone, somewhere tearing out an old fence and they want to get rid of the wood. Search out Craigslist and start collecting materials. Most old fences rot along the tops and bottoms and there is plenty of salvageable wood in the middle. Most old 6' fences can still be cut down into 4 or 5 foot lengths of good salvageable wood. Most fence posts only rot out at the bottom where they make ground contact or the tops where they are exposed to rain, you can still get about 5' of salvageable wood out of a tall fence posts. Pro Tip - most cities sell their old cedar stop sign posts, these are usually quite tall and make great fence posts for privacy fences, these sell as salvage in my city for only $1 each!
Rule 2have a general idea of your fence design but really let your materials dictate the final product. HERE is an example of a fence I built using half recycled materials and half new. I supplemented my recycled wood with new cedar and came up with a design using what I had on hand.
Rule 3 even when buying new material do the math and figure out how to stretch your dollars. If you need 3' boards it is often times cheaper to buy 6' boards and cut them in half. Stretch your use of materials as far as you can.
Rule 4 Think outside the box. For example I had some shorter fence posts but I needed to make them taller for a privacy fence. I ended up strapping 2x4's to the outsides of my posts to make them taller. It looked a little funny until I got the idea to make the cavity into built in lanterns. HERE is a day view and HERE is a better night view. Again, this is all recycled/scrap metal combined with some very cheap landscape lights.
Rule 5 stain is your friend. HERE is an example of a fence made from many different recycled fence scraps that were many different shades and colors. A few coats of stain and it looks like a very 'normal' fence. Look at big box stores for discount mis-matched fence stain that can be purchased at a deep discount, you can even mix a few of these together and come up with your own unique color assuming they are the same type of base stain. (don't mix oil and acrylic, duh!)
We are a design build team that leans heavily on recycled materials here area a few bonus shots gate from scrap metal, we didn't make THIS but its a good example of how to stretch your fence height, as is THIS and HERE is a good example of a minimal use of materials to save money.
Using these tips you can change a fence job from a couple thousand dollar project to being a couple hundred dollar project or less. Embrace your scrappy side!

It does everything as advertised.
I clean an old fence (17 years old) with 3 or 4 coats of different stains.
It looks really clean for an old fence.
I use the black and the and the green nozzles.
The black to apply "Simple-Green Deck&Fence" Cleaner and green to remove all the dirt and old stains.
Then I used Graco Airless sprayer(Magnum) to apply new semi-transparent stain.
It looks great.
Project expenses:
------------------
- Power Washer $149 (order online)
- Fence cleaner $11 (order online)
- Airless sprayer (Stain) $240 (at store because I needed some assistance)
- Stain semi-transparent 5 gallons $135 (we stained just from outside 150x6 feet)
- Miscellaneous $100 (I replaced some of the boards and bought brush and painting cloth)

The average price from a contractor was $1200, so I save $565... and keep the
